Masters of different professions (historians, sculptors, decorators, make-up artists, etc) and highest qualification take part in creating wax figures.
Creation of a wax figure of some historical person begins from serious historical research: archives, descriptions, portraits, photographs and posthumous mask are studied to make the most authentic portrayal. But this is not the whole work. Each wax character has its own typical expression and, as a result, traits of psychological portrait.
Masterpieces of best sculptors of Saint-Petersburg (M. K. Anikushin’s apprentices: G. Ievleva, A. Murzin, A. Shirokov, who studied in sculpture class in Saint-Petersburg Art Academy) are the base for the wax figures. These sculptors take part in different exhibitions in Russia and abroad: in Sweden, France, Germany, USA. Pieces of these sculptors are owned by private collectors in Germany, France, USA and other countries.
Russian masters worked out a unique technology of making wax which allows demonstrating wax figures in a wide range of temperature: from «-40» to «+40»C°. This wax doesn’t shine and perfectly imitates human skin.
Masters of the museum in their work use high-quality prosthetic appliances of eyes, teeth and real hair. The hair master puts single hairs into the wax in order to make heads of hair, eyelashes, eyebrows, beards and moustache consisting of more than 40000 hairs. Then the hairdresser makes the typical for the character’s epoch hairstyle. Wax parts of the figures are properly processed by a make-up artist who makes «nails», «wrinkles» and «veins». Wax is covered by a special make-up which is periodically being renovated.
4 years ago in the museum masters began to make figures of silicone. It is much more solid and stable. The achievements are successful. Before only visible parts of the body were made of silicone (as it was with wax) and now it’s possible to make full-height nude figures. Such material as silicone allows demonstrating figures in the open air with any weather conditions, to make figures for advertisement, photography and even to decorate modern interior. (See «Alex show» section).
In the stage settings the exhibition characters interact between each other, compositions are dynamic and expressive. Halogen lamps and dark draperies make mystic atmosphere.
Nowadays the masters make moving figures, make experiments with light, music and other special effects.
