Saint-Petersburg Museum Of Wax Figures :: Museum Of Wax Persones

People appealed to work with wax upon the earliest stages of history. Wax attracted people thanks to its softness and “vividness”. Yore wax was given a special, magic sense. Wax is an amazing material created by bees which were perceived by people as particularly reasonable and organized living beings. The unique qualities of wax determined ancient people’s comprehension of it as a substance which connected the world of alive and the world of dead. Waxy images, which wore given magic qualities, were much valued. Ancient Greeks created images of Gods for performing religious ceremonies. They also made waxy dolls for children’s amusement. In Ancient Rome gypsum molds were taken from the faces of noblemen and then made waxy masks. These masks were painted and then carried near the deceased during the funeral procession. It was considered that a waxy mask can give power to the spirit of the deceased and help it to get to the world of dead successfully, protecting it from spiteful spirits.
